We had Samson for less than a year when we decided to get Harley, both are neutered, while Harley was more A type when we got him (even though he was like 2 lbs). They worked out their differences. They are inseparable now, sleep together, play together, Harley is very protective if my mother's dog covers over but not in an aggressive way just barks. We later (4 years later) adopted a female pitbull into our family. They all get along wonderfully, it really is how you transition dogs into your home, behaviors you allow. I can imagine my life without any of my dogs.
