Default Retained teeth, Neutering, Age? OH MY!

Our pup is 3.5 months old (3lbs), and I am starting to get antsy over the neutering, and retained teeth talk that I hear/read!
I've been told to wait until he is around 5 months (from our vet) to have him neutered, to me that seems not only a bit young, but still too small. Again, I heard with toy/small dogs with all of their "parts" being small, it is better to wait until they are a bit bigger. I have seen others waiting until they are 7 months and that puts my mind at ease.
Now, onto the second part of my question...the retained puppy teeth...how do I know if any are retained, other than seeing adult teeth behind/in front of the puppy teeth? I grew up with BIG dogs and they just seemed to swallow their puppy teeth, on occasion we would find one, but not often. I have not noticed any changes to his teeth as of yet!!
I know I will probably get numerous pieces of advice, and that is great...I love reading everyone's ideas, opinions and thoughts...and then making my decision from there! Thanks all!
