My thoughts exactly!! One mans trash is another mans treasure!! I'd say you totally lucked out and got yourself a beautiful little yorkie boy...and it sounds like he really lucked out too!!
I got my older pup in a similar situation. The lady was moving and she had too many dogs and did not want to take my dog with her. She was considering putting him to sleep

when my mom asked me if I was interested in taking him!! Of course I couldn't let her put a perfectly healthy 7 year old pup to sleep. I had no other dogs and really wanted a yorkie like my mom's 2 yorkies, so taking the father of her dogs was a no brainer!!
Looking back, I know why his owner was going to put him down instead of rehoming him...he's got behavioral problems. He's territorial and he is fear aggressive towards strangers and certain dogs and he piddles everywhere. If she gave him away to someone and he bit them, it could be a liability...and it could turn out as a really bad situation...and he couldn't go just anywhere as he doesn't get along with all dogs. Not many people are going to want to take on and deal with a dog like that.
Luckily, I was his perfect solution!! I had no animals at the time and I have a lot of experience with dogs. I also have a high tolerance for issues other people may find unacceptable. I am also one that looks at a pet as a life long commitment, no matter what.... so his former owner knew that he would always be well taken care of and he wouldn't end up at the pound or in the wrong hands by someone who wouldn't care for him.
It sounds like you are Peanut's perfect solution!! I have to believe that he will be in a better situation simply because you want him and love him. Who knows what would have happened to him if you didn't adopt him?!?
One thing you may want to look into is pet insurance for your little man!! My "free" yorkie has been anything but free. Last year, he started having digestive and neurological issues and I spent a lot of money at the vet. He's worth every penny, but I wish I would have gotten health insurance when I first acquired him.
