My mom and step-mom are both redheads and they definitely have coarser hair - surely takes longer to dry. My mom is more strawberry-blonde so it's not as coarse but my step-mom's hair is pretty difficult. She uses a wonderful hair-straightening shampoo and products that make a huge difference. Wonder if you could do something like that with these "red-head" dogs? I guess the PH balance issue would come into play using human shampoo/products on a dog but I imagine it would work.
