It really depends on what ticks are in your area. Revolution covers heartworm, fleas, and the american dog tick but it does not cover other ticks like the tick that causes lyme disease.

Here in New England we have several types of ticks. We have used Heartgard for heartworm and intestinal parasites and also use Frontline Plus topical treatment for fleas and ticks. I've heard some say that in the south frontline has not worked as well for them so they use something else like Advantix II.
