Personally, I think length and height is better to go by when purchasing a carrier. My baby boy Kaji was 5.5 lbs when he can home at 12 months and he was 12 inches from base of neck to base of tail, and 12 inches from the tip of his head to the floor. He hasn't grown in the last 4 years, but he has put on at least 1.5-2 lbs since then. (No he's not fat) he still uses the same size carrier which I bought based on his measurements, and then taking weight into consideration. The hardware has to be sturdy enough to hold him, but more importantly, comfy enough that he has enough room to sit in his bag, or lay down.
