I gave my aging Yorkie Coconut oil in his food and I believe it slowed down the process. His sight was diminished, but he could always see and avoid objects. and see movement. I also used some special eye drops... I've forgotten the name (I'll post it when I find it) Think it was Occuvite or something similar. I too did not feel comfortable having surgery done on him at his age.

I did have my vet check him out prior to doing this.
