When we took Toki in for routine blood work, it showed that she had elevated liver enzymes. The vet gave us some Denamarin to help with liver support/function as well as Royal Canin Hepatic while we continued to investigate the cause of these elevated enzymes.
We ended up doing a bile acid test, ultrasound, and ultimately scintigraphy at the NCSU vet school to determine if she had a shunt. Turns out she has what we believe to be asymptomatic MVD (we didn't do a biopsy to confirm since she was otherwise healthy and had no issues). She doesn't require a special hepatic diet or any medications although I still like to supplement with milk thistle or Denamarin...that was a year ago and now her liver enzymes are at a normal level (they can fluctuate with MVD of course) and still has no symptoms...it's something that we will monitor a couple times a year but otherwise has not affected Toki.
Your poor boy sounds like he's been through a lot. Is he having any other symptoms otherwise? Pups requiring treatment for these liver issues respond well to combinations of medications, hepatic diets, and/or surgery if necessary. Just take it one step at a time...I remember being so overwhelmed in the beginning but we have a lot of members here with pups who have been through similar things that can offer support/advice from their own experiences. |
