Laundry should be done with a gentle detergent.

Benadryl is usually given more than once a day. It doesn't work for all dogs.

This may not even be allergies (although it does sound like it).

No skin infections?

Food accounts for around 10% of allergies in dogs. It is most likely something in the environment. There are several things that can be tried (allergy testing and shots, Atopica, Temaril-P, different antihistamines, etc.).

If the vet only gave Benadryl and isn't interested in going farther or doesn't have a solid direction then it will be faster and easier to just go to a dermatologist.
All of this, exactly.

Benadryl has a very short half life and won't be effective, at all, given once per day. It has to be given every 6 hours (at least 3x a day).

What does the skin look like, exactly?

If you think it's allergies, read this: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html
