  Farmers used to castrate farm animals this way, until they came up with a new way... called 'surgery'. People think they'll save money, but like with these pups, if they don't see a vet soon, the vet will have to refresh the edges of the skin by surgically removing the dried, damaged skin (that will not heal together) and may have to shorten the tails even more if there's not enough skin to cover the tip. I don't think it hurts too much, till it goes bad.
