No, an engagement ring doesn't have to be traditional diamond! A good friend got a gorgeous Blue Sapphire engagement ring. My niece got a gorgeous Emerald with diamonds (her birth stone is emerald - his is diamond!) and many of us got heirloom rings as engagement rings. I think anything should be considered - back in the olden days any ring of precious material was considered as an engement ring - it's the intention that counts and what the woman would be comfortable and enjoy! I think yours is lovely!
