Ah, that is so sad. God Bless you for helping him. I also think it will take time for him to learn that not ALL MEN are bad, I woud just take it slow, and easy, Maybe everytime your hubby comes home have him give him a treat, so eventually he starts to associate, man comes home= treat, and eventually he'll see it as a good thing.. It's worth a shot.
Load hubby up with treats before he leaves for work, or have him keep some in his car.
