I too would probably shave a dog over going through painful tangle after tangle as it can really stress an anxious or fearful dog to have a groomer in a salon setting with other dogs and strange people and scents around and excitement amped up undergoing a usually painful de-tangling session. Sounds as if the the groomer did the kindest thing for the dog's well being and worried less about appearance.
