Can you arrange to be out walking for a couple of weeks during the time they come home to break him of the habit?

Or be busy training him in obedience with luscious, high-value treats he'll do just about anything to get or just playing and roundhousing with him during the time they arrive. Hiding treats around the house and directing him to them and clapping, celebrating each time he finds one or giving him his kong toy filled with his favorite food when you hear them come in the door is another way to keep him distracted and if he stops and listens, re-toss the kong toy across the floor to re-direct him to it.
