When my Teddy Bear had liver shunt surgery last year, he did fantastic. He pretty much set his own limits. I think it varies from dog to dog.
If Tank does not like being crated, you might want to put him in a pet stroller if you have one so he can move from room to room with you.
He was on lactulose after surgery, but for only a brief time. I am sure you will get detailed instructions about that and diet.
