Feeding Hi, my thanks to everyone on this site for addressing my concerns. This is a great site. My Yorkie is finally eating again. She is now eating Wellness Adult Small Breed Formula: Turkey and Oatmeal. This kibble is easier for her to eat and just the right size. It is triangular in shape and not too thick so she does not have to work as hard to eat it. [she stopped eating the 'Toy Breed' formula]. I am continuing to dig my heals in and insist she eat the dry food. I make sure I change her water at least twice a day. I give her Wellness Treats: the petite ones that are Chicken Cherry & Spearmint [because they are hard and crunchy]. The Dental Chews I finally switched to are: Zukes Z-Bones Mini [which have much better ingredients then other dental chews]. Once in a while, if I am lucky, I can get her to eat a few Lotus Kibbles as treats. She also has a mini Mother Hubbard's Biscuit Dog Bone as a treat.
I tried other high quality dry dog foods but she would not eat them.
I rescued my Yorkie because her Original Mom got very ill and then her Second Mom got sick and had to have surgery. I don't know how old she is but I do know she is an older dog. I don't have her papers. The vet could not tell me how old she was. She was being fed Cesars Wet Dog food. I was not happy with the ingredients in Cesars so I got her to switch over to dry food but it was not easy and still is an uphill battle.
For those who cook for their Yorkies I have a very simple recipe:
Cooked plain grilled Chicken Breast, cooked Broccoli, cooked Brussel Sprouts, Cooked carrots, Cooked peas, orzo, olive oil, seasoning [no salt].
Cook all ingredients and then cut with sissor into small bite size pieced. Toss with olive oil, orzo and seasoning. Put in a large tupperware container and store in refridgerator. Heat and serve.
My mother has fed this to her dogs in the past, however if you can stick with dry food, I suggest you do so. All the recalls they have had with dry food is concerning but I still feel it is best to stick with dry food. |
