Default New Yorkie - Jiro - Potty confusion

Hi there -

We've had our puppy Jiro with us for 1 week. He's 16 months old, coming from a respectable breeder in NJ who had separated him from his mom a week prior to that. He was trained well - came to us peeing in one spot on paper, and sure enough he was using the same spot on his wee wee pad in our kitchen right away

After the weekend that he spent in the kitchen with us we started to let him out to the rest of our (tiny) apartment to explore with us. Always under supervision.

We were stunned by how great the potty regimen was going. No matter where he was, or how soon after he ate he went to his pad in the kitchen and went. We got comfortable with it quickly, probably too comfortable.

2 days ago he started to thrash his wee wee pad when we were sleeping. We tried to straighten that out by taping it down to the floor - but he learned how to remove the tape quickly and then thrash it again.

At that point he started to go in a spot in front of our bathroom. Now he's drawn to it like a magnet. When I came home today I found he was holding it in till he could be released from the kitchen - and go to there again.

We're baffled as to how to correct it. We just sat till he peed after dinner in the kitchen on the pad, but then when released he tricked us and dropped a deus in front of the bathroom....... right now we're perched above the kitchen waiting for him to go so we can give him a treat and set him free.

Any suggestions? Thank you!
