  From what I've read, it's best to wait until growth plates are closed. That may happen for Yorkies by eight or nine months old, and an X-ray can confirm it. Spaying pups too early increases urinary incontinence.  
I've had five female Yorkies who were all spayed. Their personalities didn't change, but it's more of a struggle to keep them thin, even with a lot of exercise, because of the loss of hormones.
