I would not ever consider using any type of electric fence with any size dog and would probably smack anyone I know right in the head who suggested it.

I didn't know about the warning not to use with dogs under 10 pounds -- not that I have ever considered using an electric fence.
I agree with you about leaving a dog outside unattended. I wouldn't even do it with a large dog in this day and age.
