Most vets I know don't test for heartworm in pups up to 6 months old before beginning prevention. The reason being that any possible microfilae would not have yet matured and would be killed off upon beginning prevention at that time.

Personally I would wait. IMO it's enough that a young pup still has vaccinations to go through without adding pesticides to its immature system.
