I had that problem with Joel, but he's gotten a lot better. When it's something that he really doesn't want to put down (tiny rocks he finds on the floor lol) I show him a treat and wait for him to drop it on his own without saying anything and then right when he's about to then I say 'drop it' and he gets the treat with lots of praise. Now when he finds a rock(like he did today) I just say drop it or put it down and 90 percent of the time he drops it unless it's some kind of food lol
