Yes, that's the way we went. First you need to decide, do you want this just for you home, or do you want to be able to take your laptop everywhere and be connected? If you just want to connect things in and around your home and the router is the way to go. We have so many things connected wirelessly with the router, several different gaming systems, a printer, my husbands laptop and my iPad, as well as satellite TV. Once you buy the router, there's no monthly cost besides your regular internet provider's bill. Talk to you internet provider, but you do not have to buy the router through them.
