My mom recently went through this and I was surprised how quickly she recovered. (She is in her early 70s)
They did the laproscopic surgery with 3 small incisions which healed pretty quickly. She had the surgery on Thursday morning and after a social weekend was up and almost back to normal the following Monday.
She didn't mention any gas problems, but it could be that it just didn't come up in conversation.
