I think the motivation of love and encouragement really works with these very bright little guys? They know when they've slipped up and probably feel far worse about it than we do. They want to please and I believe appreciate the intelligence that tolerates their little mistakes.
Totally agree with you, encouragement really play a big part of dog training.
And, of course, "Treats" as well.

Dogs usually don't remember what they did "Wrong".
Instead, they will remember what they did "Right" to make their owner happy and receive "Treats".
