Everyone has their own stlye and I would recommend looking at other sketches and seeing how they used light and shadows. You can have your style and people either like it or they don't. I personally love all different types of art. I think that practice and having the correct lighting will be great for you! Don't stop. Keep practicing. If you are looking for a more realistic approach, use the grid system! Look at where the light is coming from.
You could just keep doing what you're doing and have a unique style. Charcoal may be something you're intereste in. I think you would love it!!
