It doesn't take long to have a well behaved dog , just lots of patience to build up that trust and comfort those fears.
I agree with this to a point... a pup can be comforted from afar. You can still reassure them that they are ok and encourage them to calm down without petting them or picking them up. In my opinion picking them up after they have cried and bark non stop is only increases the problem and rewards the behavior.
