I tried really hard to make sure she didn't have to learn that lesson as a 3 or 4 pound pup and really didn't want her to until at least her first birthday, but I guess all dogs have to learn that toads taste horrible. Our rescue Minnie (ironically a 12 lb yorkie) knew to never mess with them, but we got her as an adult. Cook is still in that taste everything phase of puppyhood, though not as bad as the time from about 3-5 months thankfully.
