It will help a lot if you can get him some exercise before you leave the house. While 8 hours of inactivity is doable, that combined with 8 hours of sleep the night before can make for a long day. Toys will help, but I find they generally just sleep while I'm gone.
Try to establish a routine where you take a short walk in the mornings, then another in the evenings.
