My yorkies weigh between 4 and 12 pounds and they all have dentals as needed...most of them need them yearly.
The risk of illness from periodontal disease is much, much higher than the risk of an anesthetic death.
It of course is very important that your vet use good anesthetic protocol. There is a link about that here:
