Good rule of thumb to remember.....

If you have problems with the top thread, the problem is with the bobbin.
If you have problems with the bobbin thread, the problem is with your top thread.

And it's possible to have old thread, or your machine just not like a particular thread. If I'm having issues, and nothing seems to be fixing them, I try a different thread and different bobbin. If the machine works, it was the thread or bobbin thread. If not, it's a machine issue.
