I think it, as with everything in life, depends on the situation and environment and dog.

My 75lb Shelby-Dale is an awesome big brother, but even HE has his moments (like rough housing play and running) when I feel the need to step in and separate Mandie from the situation. Not because he would ever intentionally hurt her but just his weight verses hers.

If it is a big dog that I don't know, I would monitor that dog's demeaner and go from there...
