If you're really intent on a permanent fix, then...

Get a bag of Concrete.
Mix and fill the hole to about 2" below grade.
Fill up to Grade with Dirt (you don't have to let the Concrete dry)
Grass will grow back in the Dirt and mask the barrier.

It only takes a couple inches of Concrete, to provide a solid barrier.
