I've seen the larger fetch machines before and plan on getting one eventually for our border collie, but that ifetch for smaller dogs and for indoor use looks great...just hope they'll sell it in the UK. (off to check it out)
Caleb also loves fetch games but doesn't bring it the whole way back, so I tie string to toys and throw them and pull them back, he LOVES the string games. It makes it easier for my back also. I'd never leave the ball or toys lying around with string attached though, in case he got caught up in it. We break up the day with several play sessions and I hide the throw toys in between or he'd bug me to death. As it is, he stares at where they are and whines as he looks between me and the place he knows the 'out of sight' toy is. (these dogs talk) I say no and he goes off sulking. They'd play all day wouldn't they?
