You'll get it . . that material is not easy to work with. You need to have your machine set just perfect. The tension and the length of the stitched need to be just right. Loosen your tension and lengthen your stitches. Plus make sure you are not pulling on the fabric , let the machine do the work for you. There is a thread on the onsie conversion here somewhere... might help to take a look.
