Encephalitis is infection of the brain. It is caused by a viral infection, bacterial infection, or more rarely, fungal and even by parasites. Then there is a post infectious encephalitis that can be caused by vaccinations, where the auto immune system is attacked/affected. The first thing that will be done is determined what the causative factor is, and then treating the causative agent....in humans, an infectious disease specialist heads this up. When the cause of the infection/inflammation is determined and treated, then treatment of the symptoms and side effects of the disease process are concurrently treated.
