It sounds like it will be successful if he only cried for 2 minutes. I've rewarded mine for getting in the crate on their own, but they still fussed. I had to put their crates on the nightstand beside my bed so they could see me, and slowly move them into the position I wanted them in. With Dallas it only took about a week to get his crate into position (But god forbid I move it now! lol He fusses if it's not where it's supposed to be), and it took about a month with Rory. It sounds like your way will be much faster! You might also try putting a shirt or something in the crate with him, so he has your scent close to him.
