I am not suggesting you try this at home (as the disclaimer says on TV) but I have given bones for a very long time. I buy trays of them at the grocery store and they are about 2 inches in diameter and 1 inch thich. I scrape all the marrow out, cook the bones til I can scrape them totally clean. Then scrub with soap, hot water and brush and let the beasties have at them. Every so often I scrub them, and re-cook with bouillon cubes so they have a little flavor. I have never had a problem but I have very specific things I look for..
