Relative to relations between the puppy and the older dogs, let them work it out on their own -- unless things look dangerous.
Greet, pet, and do everything for the older dogs first. Keep their routine as normal as possible and lavish them with the same praise/affection that the puppy is getting.
Training helped bring my two boys together. Doing simple tricks for treats. We also played fetch and walked together. You will have to wait on the walking until the pup is old enough.
I also agree that you should try to talk to your SIL about giving pets as gifts. Tell her that you appreciate where her heart was, but pets are a big responsibility financially and in terms of time. Not everyone is prepared for this responsibility. Also, where they come from is important. |
^^I agree with Maximo. I would talk to your SIL and tell her how absolutely in love you and your family are with the new puppy, just a heads up next time would be greatly appreciated.
I understand what you were trying to say. It's not that you're unhappy with the puppy, and I'll be taking your own words op, who doesn't love a puppy?!?! But the fact of the matter is you have your life under control with the 2 pups. You had a budget worked out for them, you had had a routine, you knew where to take them for long trips, or who to leave them with, etc etc etc. Unless you spent the last 2 months dropping hints and telling everyone and their mom that all you wanted for Christmas is a new puppy, then yes, a puppy can be inconvenient.
Anyway, on to your questions. To me it does sound like your boy dog is marking, neutered or not, they are capable of marking, the instinct is still there, just the overall drive to do it is not. That is unless provoked, like say having an intruder in the house. (Ie new puppy) I have heard that changes in their routine can cause some pups to regress on their training. Good luck with your new pack member! I'm sure once the dust settles, everything will go back to normal, and you can start enjoying your new surprise addition to the family.
