I can relate. My 74-year old father lives me and helps take care of dogs. Because of him and the way our house is set up, it is helpful to have my boys pad trained.
Do you have a garage? I have a friend with a strictly outdoor trained dog who will use the pad when necessary in the garage. To the dog, it's not in the house.
My second boy was strictly outdoor trained when we brought him home at 8 months. He was willing to pee on the pad, but he didn't want to poop indoors. I had to pen him and sit with him until he did it. Admittedly, it was a sad experience because he was so desperate to go outside. When he saw how happy I was and that I took care of cleaning it up right away, then he was fine with it.
