If you really want him on dry food then it would be best to soften it for him.
Can you imagine the torture a dog would go through as the hard dry food was "hardeniing up his gums" ??!!

Poor little guy!! He looked so sad in his picture. Hopefully he starts coming around and feeling better.

There is a pitbull at the shelter my step mom volunteers for and she likes her feet raw due to anxiety from being at the shelter. She's been there for over a year. Perhaps your little guy is/was licking his hair off for the same reasons. He might not have been locked in a cage, but being locked in a basement alone isn't much better. Hopefully he will bond with your little girl and she will help his separation anxiety and teach him how to be a dog again.
