Ok breed I would have to guess Basset Hound & Westie . . especially with the way the two front legs are. Very common in Bassets and with that white fluffy hair and those huge round eyes.. I see Westie in him.
He lucky you found him and took him in . . hope you can find his family if not it looks as if her will be in good hands with your friend and her family.
