Hard water is a pain, thecstaining is usually from higher iron levels. You might consider renting a softener, or asking the owner if you can. Companies like Kinetico or Culligan will install it and maintain it. All you do is pay for rental (not very expensive) and salt. When you leave, the company removes it and returns the plumbing basicall yback to where it was.
Maybe the owner would let you?
And yes, it can give you the flkies and itchies.
Forgot to say, you can also buy inline shower head filters from culligan
