I use my debit card as a credit card. I sign for it instead of using my pin. Reason is I get cash back if I use it as credit but not as debit. The merchants get charged 3% (usually) for a credit transaction, whether it is an actual CC or debit card matters not. But merchants do not get charged if it is used as debit. So my bank wants me to use as credit so they get 3% from the merchant, and I get 1% from the bank. However, that said, 99% of the time I use cash.
After coming back from Paris I went to the bank and had to talk to the mgr to get the old fashioned card. And it had to be sent from the main bank in MN. But that was about 8 years ago. Recently my husband's old fashioned card was ruined in the washer and he was not able to get a non Visa debit card. My card never had an expiration date on it, so unless I loose it I guess I am safe. If I wind up loosing it, then I will just not carry a cash card with me. I almost never use it anyway, and since I go to the bank weekly with commission checks, I just get the cash I need for the week then. The banks only offer this card because like you say they make money from Visa and MasterCard, believe me they don't do it to help their customers.
