It's good to keep practicing tricks every day. You might be surprised when he will follow them as "commands." Max got out into the yard and was sprinting toward the open gate. I screamed "down" and he obeyed! I almost fell on top of him doing a dive to catch him.
Same with Teddy. He obeyed "come" and "down" in two scary situations.
In addition to practicing these "tricks", I have taught my boys words while walking and daily routines. They know "wait" which means stop walking and sit. They know "okay" and "quick quick" for crossing streets.
You can use any words you want to "mark" a behavior.
In terms of general obedience, having a daily routine of activities is very helpful. Doing them around the same time each day and talking to Charlie will help. When your dog knows what to expect, it has a calming effect.
