Some dogs have this reaction to any piece of clothing. I have seen dogs and cats lie down like they are dying when clothes are put on them. Teddy had a similar reaction the first time I put a coat on him. As soon as I put a coat on his brother Max, everything was fine. He now loves clothes.
Judging from reading this forum for a few years, neutering very rarely has a negative impact on personality or energy levels. My boys are both neutered and just as feisty and energetic as ever.
Neutering doesn't magically cure the urge to mark, but it can help. Training will also be necessary.
