If you don't like confining your dog to a small area (crate). You can try training your puppy in an x-pen. Just place his bed or towel in the pen along with a pee pad or newspaper. Aslo provide your puppy with some toys, this way he/she has something to do.

With this method, you are keeping your puppy confined, but still giving him/her sufficient room to play.

The only negative is that you will not be training your puppy to hold theier bladder. If you plan on transitioning your puppy to outdoor potty training, this may not be the best idea. Otherwise, I find it works quite well.
