One of my cousins and I were born into a house with yorkies. My family had teapots (big yorkies) when she was born and they had a few litters of puppies when she was very little. When I was born we had a 5lber. I also got my own poodle when I was 7, she was 12lbs.
My other cousin got a westie when he was about 6.
Kids and yorkies can get along just fine, but it comes down to your kids personalities and you teaching them. I'd aim for a larger yorkie, at least 10lbs.
