Get him a cozy stuffed animal thats really soft and plushy to keep him company! He might just need a little something to snuggle and chew on if he gets bored in there. Does he get some exciting play time and go piddle before crate time at night? He sounds really sweet and if he's stubborn for walking try getting one of those stuffed animals that squeaks with the rope toys attached and make him run around and tug with it, get him all worked up and he'll probably be ready to pass right out after half an hour of play lol.
