Hepatic Encephalopathy is an emergency condition that needs to be controlled, if not it can lead to seizures and death. Lactulose is given every hour until diarrhea happens then skip a dose and give the normal dose with food. If the dog is having seizures from toxic blood, Lactulose can be given in an enema to get the toxins (ammonia) out of the blood and stop the seizures. Valium/Diazepam will not stop this type of seizure. Best to discuss this with your vet, as Lactulose is by prescription, and you should have it on hand if your dog has symptoms of HE. Liver tests can take days or longer to get results, with HE you will not be able to wait, treatment must start ASAP. Get the HE controlled, then continue with testing to find the cause.
