If he's getting poop on himself, you really don't have a choice but to wash him. You don't want him to stink and have poop on him. My two sleep with me and sit on the furniture, they would get a bath everyday if they got poop on themselves everyday. I don't have an answer as to how to solve the problem of him getting poop on himself, maybe someone else does.
